Educators often speak in an alphabetic code that can
confuse the uninitiated parent. Here is a reference guide
to breaking the code of commonly used acronyms and abbreviations.
ADA Average daily attendance. Formula based on student attendance, which determines funding levels from the State to schools. |

API Academic Perfomance Index. Measurement used by the State to rank schools according to academic testing performance. |

AYP Adequate yearly progress. The pace of growth of students on standardized tests required by the federal "No Child Left Behind" laws. |

BPST Basic Phonics Skills Test. A phonics test used in grades 1 through 3, to measure students' decoding ability. |

BTSA Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment. Special training for new teachers. |
 |
CABE California Association for Bilingual Educators. |
 |
CDE California Department of Education. |
 |
CELDT California English Language Development Test, which measures the level of English proficiency of students who are learning English as a second language. |

CiSBIT Stands for "California Standards Bank of Items and Tests". This is a computer program teachers use to create math and reading quizzes aligned to State standards. |

CST California Standards Test - part of the state STAR assessment program. |

SARB School Attendance Review Board. A meeting, usually held with a family, school officials, social services and law enforcement, to discuss serious school attendance problems and set limits and consequences. |

SDAIE Specially Designed Content Instruction Delivered in Englsh. A teaching strategy for English learners to help them develop academic language and vocabulary in content areas, such as science and social studies. |
