James Grier, President
James Grier, Jr. was first elected to the Governing Board in November 2000 following
a 20-year career as a 6th grade teacher in National School District. His current term
expires in December 2012. He currently serves as Chairperson of the National City
Parks & Recreation Committee and is a seven-year member of the National City Chamber
of Commerce. He is also Past-President of National City Elementary Teachers Association.
Mr. Grier holds a Bachelor's Degree from USC and a Master's Degree from San Diego State University.
Rosalie "Rosie" Alvarado, Clerk
Ms. Alvarado was first elected to the Governing Board in November 1990. Her present
term expires in December 2014. She is a retired District employee of 28 years. She
was a member of the National City Chamber of Commerce Education Committee and co-founder
of the San Diego County Boys' Baseball and National City Girls' Softball League. She is
Chair of the Citizens' Advisory Committee for R. J. Donovan Correctional Facility. Ms.
Alvarado has also been the recipient of a Congressional Distinguished Service Award and
has earned the California School Boards Association Masters In Governance certificate.
Barbara Avalos
Ms. Avalos was first elected to the Governing Board in November 2008. Her present term expires in December 2012. Ms. Avalos is an active member of the National City Community. She is currently enrolled in the Masters in Governance Program.
Alma Sarmiento
Ms. Sarmiento was first elected to the Governing Board in November 1992. Her current term expires in December 2014. She has served on the Board of Directors of the National City Chamber of Commerce, National City Boys and Girls Club, South Bay YMCA, and the American Cancer Society. She is Past-President of Paradise Valley Hospital's Partners for Prevention Coalition and Executive Director of the Sweetwater Alumni Association. She is the recipient of the Key to the City from the Mayor and City Council for her work with the youth and community of National City, the Congressional Citizen of the Month Award, as well as the Optimist Club Volunteer of the Year Award.
Elizabeth Vazquez
Ms. Vazquez was first elected to the Governing Board in November 2010 and her present term expires December 2014. She is currently enrolled in the Masters in Governance Program.
