About Our Community

National City, California comprises 8 square miles just south of San Diego and 10 miles north of the U.S. - Mexico border. The western side of the city limits borders San Diego Bay, with a substantial waterfront that includes a port, a natural salt-water estuary where the Sweetwater River and Paradise Creek meet the Bay, and a planned marina that is currently under development.

National City has a rich history, reaching back into the era of the Spanish land grants when this part of Alta California was called "Rancho Nación". The modern era of National City dates to the 1880's, when this was a hub of commerce, and the birthplace of the region's first commuter train, The National City & Otay Railway.

Today National City has a diverse and vibrant population. Our families come from many backgrounds, and our schools are quite multi-cultural. Indeed, part of our district vision states, "~ Our community's cultural diversity enriches learning opportunities ~"
