The Golden Bell
Award program, now in its 25th year, promotes excellence in education by
recognizing outstanding programs in school districts and county offices of
education throughout California. Golden Bell Awards reflect the depth and
breadth of education programs necessary to address students’ changing needs.
This awards program contributes to the development and evaluation of curriculum,
instruction and support services. We are proud to have received 6 Golden
Bell Awards.
Dec. 1981 - 1st Place K-6,
Outstanding "OLD" (Oral Language Development) Calendar Program
The oral language development calendar was developed and distributed to all
students in kindergarten and first grade every month. Each day of the
month contained suggested oral language activities that parents could do
with their children to increase their oral language skills.
Dec. 1989 - 1st Place K-8 "Parents As Teachers"
The Parents As Teachers serves
parents with children from birth to age 3. The program supports parents
in developing the parenting skills necessary for their children to develop
optimally during the crucial early years of life. The program is designed
to increase parent knowledge of early childhood development, effective parenting
practices, and how to detect developmental delays and health issues.
The ultimate goal of the program is to prepare children for school readiness
and school success.
Dec. 1989 - 1st Place K-8
"Extended Day Kindergarten"
The National School District has never been able to offer full day kindergarten
programs due to limited classroom facilities. In 1989, the district developed
an extended day kindergarten model for selected students. This allowed
identified kindergarten students to have an additional two hours of instructional
time daily focusing on oral language development, math and literacy skills.
1998 Outstanding Multilevel/District-Wide Science Program, "The Science
of Discovery"
The National School District has had an extensive history of working with
the University of California, San Diego in designing and implementing state-of-the-art
teacher training in science. This program focused on providing teachers
with quality science content training and access to high quality instructional
materials. This combination helped to make the National School District
a leader in science education in the county.
2003 Outstanding K-8 Mathematics Program, "Mathematics Collaboration -
A Partnership for Learning"
Another collaborative effort between the National School District and the
University of California, San Diego (UCSD) was the Mathematics Collaboration
– A Partnership for Learning. This program offered extensive staff
development for all teachers in the district and special opportunities for
teacher leaders to become math specialists through a certificate program
at UCSD. During the time that this training was offered, math scores
in the district increased significantly.
2004 - for "Ready, Set, Learn"
Ready, Set, Learn‚ is a program that offers preschool classes for students
who do not qualify for the district's state-sponsored preschool program.
These preschool classes are designed to prepare three and four year olds
with the skills necessary to be successful in kindergarten and beyond.
More than 100 students are served yearly in these "Kinder Prep" programs
at five school sites in the district.
2011 - for "WINGS Before and After School Program"
WINGS‚ is a program that offers students a rich array of enrichment opportunities in an after school program. This award winning program provides students with opportunities to receive homework assistance, participate in intramural sports, dance and theater programs five days a week throughout the school year.
