First Grade Music Lesson

Patriotic Songs


Arts Discipline: Music/songs “America” and “Yankee Doodle”

Grade level: Grade 1

Standards:
  • 3.0 Historical and Cultural Context
  • Role of Music 3.1 - Recognize and talk about music and celebrations of the cultures represented in the school population.
  • 3.4 Use developmentally appropriate movements in responding to music from various genres, periods, and styles (rhythm, melody, form).
Language Arts standards:
  • RC 2.1 Identify text that uses sequence or other logical order.
  • RC 2.6 Relate prior knowledge to textual information.
Social Studies:
  • 1.3.1 Recite and sing songs that express American Ideals.
Approximate time—Teacher will estimate the time of this lesson. (one week)

Topic—Patriotic songs

Rationale—Sing songs that express American ideals. Social Studies unit 3, lesson 1 **Teacher will choose to use one song or use the two songs (“America”, “Yankee Doodle”) using this same lesson format for both songs.

Objective(s)—Students will be able to read the titles and identify the author’s of the song. Students will also be able to sing the songs and identify its importance to our country. Students will be able to identify and clap out the rhythm to the songs. Students will understand the relevance of the song in the history of our country.

Historical & Cultural Context: During the introduction of the lesson, students will talk about the title and the words to the song.

Interdisciplinary Connections - LA. RC 2.1, RC 2.6, HSS 1.3.1

Strategy—Teacher will go over the words in the song first and then go over them with students repeating after teacher.

Vocabulary—Rhythm = The combination of long and short, even and uneven sounds that convey a sense of movement in time. Web game (Teacher can click on this link and have students do rhythm exercises) 

Introduction—Ask the students if they are familiar with the song “America”/ “Yankee Doodle”. Go over how the song describes the land pointing out the descriptive words. Discuss the word macaroni in the Yankee Doodle song and discuss historical background using flipcharts. After interacting with the flipcharts teacher will go over the words in the song and then have them repeat after teacher.

Procedures—Teacher will give students definition of what rhythm is and click on link so students can practice clapping rhythm. Students will clap to the words as teacher models the clapping first and they clap after the teacher. Teacher will let them know they are creating rhythm with the clapping. As students clap the song a few times they can sing and clap the song together. Students will hear and listen to the rhythm they are creating as a group. Teacher will go over flipchart on “America” song and go over the missing words interactively with students before giving handout of fill in the blanks. Teacher will go over “Yankee Doodle” song on flipchart with lyrics and historical background. Practice song with students and practice rhythm with song. Click on video to show students.

Closure—Students will share what they learned about the songs and our country. Students will fill in missing word in hand out (America) song. Teacher will model and do whole group and interactively put sentences in order as students take turns interacting with flipchart. Students will cut and paste order of song (Yankee Doodle) song.

Assessment -- Students will fill in sentence frames using the words of the song “America” to end the lesson. Students will write and read words to the song that they have filled in the blanks and read sentences taking turns as a group. Do you think Samuel F. Smith used the right words to describe the song of our country at the time? What words would you have used differently? What does the word macaroni mean? Why do you think he used that word?

Students will have memorized words to the songs, they will have created rhythm with clapping songs and used verbal or written form to the songs. Students will have learned background knowledge for each song.

  • Put sentences in order to the song

Resources/Materials—Social Studies student handbook (English). Bililngual classes will use student copy of songs lyrics attached below. Teacher’s social studies manual and Promethean board flipcharts. Introduction to unit 3/ lesson 1, in Social Studies.
