First Grade Music Lesson

Arts Discipline: Music and Visual Arts
“De Colores” song/ landscape drawings

Grade level: Grade 1

Standards:
  • Visual Arts 3.0 Historical and cultural context
  • 3.2 Identify and describe various subject matter in art (e. g. landscapes, seascapes, portraits, still life).
  • 2.0 Writing Applications (genre and their characteristics)
  • W2.2 Write a brief expository descriptions of a real object, person, place, or event, using sensory details.

Approximate time- Teacher will estimate lesson time.

Topic - Mexican culture, song and art

Rationale - Sing a Mexican cultural song/ draw an art landscape that expresses Mexican culture and write a description of the drawing.

Objectives - Students will be able to sing the song “De Colores” and learn the history behind it. They will be exposed to colorful art work by a Mexican artist depicting the Mexican culture and will create a landscape drawing along with a brief writing description of their drawing and how it relates to the artist drawings.

Interdisciplinary Connections

Social Science Standards 1.5.1 Recognize the ways in which they are all part of the same community, sharing principles, goals, and traditions despite their varied ancestry; the forms of diversity in their school and community; and the benefits and challenges of a diverse population.
2.0 Writing applications, W2.2

Strategy - Teacher will go over words and their meaning in the song “De Colores”. Teacher will discuss historical background and sing song with students. Teacher will show students the art portraits of the artist to students pointing out the colors in the art work and how it depicts the Mexican culture.

Vocabulary - song words such as; colores (colors), campos (landscapes) and other words necessary for students to understand the song. For the historical background students will need to know the word cursillistas (a person who attends a religious retreat).

Introduction - Ask students if they are familiar with the song “De Colores”. Discuss the words to the song and how it describes the landscape and the farm animals. Go over the historical background of how the song came to be, using the flipcharts.

Procedure - Teacher will sing song with students multiple times throughout the duration of the lesson. Then they will sing along with the United Streaming video (imbedded in the flipchart) that teaches the words to the song. Teacher will then go over the artist’s picture gallery and point out the colors he used in his landscapes and portraits depicting the Mexican culture.

Closure - The students will draw a landscape of their choice using bright colors as the artist did.

Assessment - Students will write about their drawing and describe the colors they used and why.

Resource/Materials - Promethean board flipchart, and artist biography.
