Arts Discipline: Poetry

Grade level-- 4th Grade

Standards:
  • 1.0 Artistic Perception-Develop Perceptual Skills and Visual Arts Vocabulary
Approximate time—2 Days over 30 minutes

Topic—Focus on using adjectives within poetry

Rationale—Students need to learn how to use adjectives within poetry to create imagery.

Objective(s)—Students will be able to use adjective(s) to describe nouns within poetry. Students will create 1 stanza (3-4 lines) using adjectives where appropriate with a teacher given topic.

Interdisciplinary Connections— Language Arts Standards for 4th Grade-Written and Oral English Language Conventions, LC 1.2. LS 2.4. (recite brief poems…)

Strategy--Instructional strategies will vary. Some may be combined. Here are the basic strategies: Direct instruction (I do) Practice (We do—teacher and students) Independent/Assessment (You do-students only).

Vocabulary—Adjectives-describe nouns. What kind, how many, which one. Also certain adjectives may be considered vocabulary. For example: confusing trails or tireless effort

Day 3 Introduction— Adjective examples taken from the story “Akiak” by Robert Blake. Houghton Mifflin, Theme 1. (10 minutes)
1. Students and teacher will work on Warm-up together to access prior knowledge.
2.Teacher and students will identify the adjectives in the sentence on the promethean board.
3. Students can come up and write the adjectives on the promethean board.
4. Students and teacher will fill in the frame: “Akiak is ___________ and __________.”

Procedures—
5. Teacher will go over articles as adjectives -a, an, the
6. Teacher will go over the questions what kind and how many as related to adjectives.
7. Teacher will show them sentences related to the questions of what kind, how many, articles.
8. These sentences are underneath the green boxes on the flipchart.

20-25 minutes (This may be the start of Day 2 after reviewing adjective definitions from yesterday)
9. Teacher and students will find adjectives in sample sentences with teacher guidance.

Assessment--

10. With a partner, students will create a stanza for “Akiak” .

For example:
  • The dogs have fun
  • The dogs run
  • In the snow
  • Oh no, here they go!
11. Students add adjectives to nouns:
  • The twelve, tireless, brave dogs have fun
  • The strong, worthy dogs run
  • In the blistering, frigid snow
  • Oh no, here they go!
Closure—
12. Students share their stanzas with at least two other partner groups. “This will help you to use adjectives in poetry and your writing efficiently.”

Clean-up--
Assessment— Writing a stanza with the topic - “Akiak” using adjectives correctly.

Resources/Materials—
Promethean ActivBoard
Student journals or folders
Houghton Mifflin-Theme 1
Any poems that teacher would like to share.
