Arts Discipline: Visual Arts

Grade level--6th Grade

Standards: 2.4 Create increasingly complex works of arts reflecting personal choices and increased technical skill

Approximate time—3-4 30 minute periods

Topic—Outer Space

Objective—Students will create a 3-D model of Sojourner, the Mars Rover

Strategy--Instructional strategies will vary. Some may be combined. Here are the basic strategies:
  • Group Process--cooperative groups
  • Project--research, presentation, etc. that is done over a long period of time
Vocabulary—
3-Dimensional: A model vs. a drawing

Introduction—Show images of Sojourner and remind students that it took scientists years to design.

Procedures—
  • Divide students into small-groups
  • Provide students with a variety of materials including recyclable materials or ‘junk’ materials, boxes, etc.
  • Direct students to use a variety of materials to construct a model of sojourner.
  • Ask then to be problem-solvers and figure out what materials work best.
  • Encourage them to experiment!

Closure: Display final projects, and lead a class discussion reflecting on processes of creating.

Assessment— Simply assess by visual evidence of completed work

Resources/Materials—
  • Paper
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Empty Boxes
  • Any and all available materials that can be utilized
    • Cardboard
    • tagboard
    • Styrofoam
    • Twine
    • foil
