Special Education

The National School District provides a full continuum of services for students aged 3-12 years with disabilities whose needs cannot be met through modification of the regular education program. Services depend on the needs of the individual student and are usually available in both English and Spanish.

Designated Instruction and Services include speech and language development and remediation, adapted physical education, counseling, occupational therapy, specialized health care, and other services as required.

The Resource Specialist Program is designed for those students who are in the general education program for the majority of the day, but receive support from a resource specialist either within the regular classroom or through a pull out model to meet their learning goals.

Special Day Classes are available for those students who require more intensive intervention in a small class setting for most of their school day. Special Day Classes are available for students with mild to moderate handicaps, such as learning disabilities and speech impairments. Students in these programs participate in the core curriculum. Students with moderate to severe handicaps participate in Special Day Class programs with an emphasis in a functional skills curriculum. Students with disabilities who are 3-5 years of age participate in our non-categorical Special Day Class programs.

Children with disabilities who are younger than three years may be eligible for a home program though the HOPE Infant Program. This program is administered by the San Diego County Office of Education.
