Math Specialist Program
Working in collaboration with the University of California at San Diego, the National School District was awarded a grant to provide professional development for teachers in the area of math. This grant offered teachers an opportunity to become Math Specialists. Teachers were presented the prospect of earning a Professional Certificate in the teaching of mathematics by taking eight courses offered by UCSD Extension. These 20 units of coursework provided teachers with 180 hours of math learning and the Professional Certificate.
Twenty-four teachers rose to the challenge. They devoted their time and energy after school, on weekends, and during the summer and became Math Specialists. These dedicated teachers earned the Professional Certificate in May of 2005.
Math Inservices
Emphasizing the math standards, all K-6 teachers, including special education teachers, have participated in six full days of training during the academic day since 2001. In addition teachers were offered a variety of learning sessions after school.
In the 2004-2005 academic year, the focus for each grade level reflected the areas of need after reviewing test scores from 2004. New teachers and teachers new to their grade levels participated in additional days of training with the math pacing guide providing the focus.
